about

What comes to mind when thinking about David Grisman's very own "dawg music canon"? Hot club inspired gyspy jazz? Modal Jazz? Bop? Latin? Bluegrass? As Janice Bain puts it, "the dawg's own music".

In this homage to the great dawg himself, composer and musical director Jason Keiser honors Grisman with his eastern-european original composition "Val's for Dawg". Interesting to note, this piece was written two days before the session!

"Val's for Dawg" highlights the string section stylings of The New Acoustic Collective. This can be especially heard in the beautiful Shostakovich inspired stylings of Nathaniel Grohmann's cello lines, David Boyden's intertwining countermelody on Baritone Fiddle reminiscent of the prolific work of Darol Anger, and beyond. Keeping the pulse and light waltz feel throughout is the tasteful pizzicato double bass playing of Rodrigo Ruiz while composer and musical director Keiser takes a backseat providing harmonic and rhythmic accompaniment and the chordal foundation necessary to take this vals to the next closest dawg music planet.

A highlight in this track is the simple yet rich complexity of the melody which follows an inspired rhythmic pattern similar to the improvisatory playing style of David Grisman.

If you listen closely to how the melody and accompaniment work together, one can recall Grisman's own compositions "O'Banion's Wake" from "Dawg 90'", and pieces inspired by DGQ records "The David Grisman Quintet", "Hot Dawg", "Quintet 80'" & "Dawg 90'".

In addition to the original melody and chordal accompaniment is the beauty of improvisational solos by Grohmann, Boyden, and Keiser. One after another, the string ensemble members bring the listener in with pretty melodic embellishment, tone, and eighth note flurries that round this piece out as a heavy weight contender among the original compositional material by Keiser with a long lasting performance and tribute to the great David Grisman and the "dawg music" canon by The New Acoustic Collective.
